NOT YOUR AVERAGE DAY AT SCHOOL

Spare Seat isn’t just about getting outside. It’s about giving young people a reason to show up. A different way in. One that brings back a sense of purpose, possibility and joy.

Spare Seat partners with schools across Adelaide to reach learners aged 12+ who thrive outside traditional settings. Those experiencing school refusal or ‘school can’t’, feeling stuck in the system, or who think differently and need another way for learning to click.

Our school programs are co-designed with you—built around your learners, your goals, and your context.

From creative subject-based adventures to wellbeing resets, we back young people to have a go, to feel valued, and to realise what they bring to the table matters.

  • A person in a swimsuit is jumping out of the water against a cloudy sky background.

    Made for Mondays

Or Feel Good Fridays. Call it what you like. This is Spare Seat’s O.G program.

It’s (generally) a 10-week, term based program and  no two days ever look the same.

We support learners who are showing up in body, but not always in spirit. They’re not lazy, or ‘bad kids’, or choosing to disengage—they just need a different way in.

From paddle boarding to trail walking, campfire cooking to coastal swims, sessions are shaped to suit the group.

No pressure. No ticking boxes. Just time outside, doing something real, with a sense of purpose and a chance to feel good again.

  • Four young people in helmets and harnesses standing outdoors with a large tent in the background, digital overlay says '100% on task' repeatedly, and a faint smiley face icon appears.

    On task

On Task is for the educators who dream of shaking things up but are stretched thin trying to make it happen.

Delivered as a one-off session or a series, we’ll work with your class/group to create an experience grounded in your subject area and powered by hands-on, adventure learning.

This is a break from the classroom and the screens—a shift in perspective, and a reminder that school doesn’t have to stay inside four walls.

We’ve seen firsthand how adventure can be the vehicle for creative arts, health, First Nations cultural learning, photography, or even designing a clothing brand.

    Outdoors. On task.

What school staff are noticing

  • A clear lift in student mood and confidence

  • Stronger peer relationships and group connection

  • Reduced overwhelm through small group, supported environments

  • Increased willingness to engage in learning, particularly for disengaged students

proof in the paddling

“Elise has been working with our learners for the past 12 months, guiding them through a range of outdoor experiences from the hills to the beach. Each small group has developed deeper connections with one another, and we’ve seen young people return to school more grounded and motivated. The Spare Seat program has become an essential part of our wellbeing support for young people.”
